Chapter 1: The Long Expected Adventure

I know what you might be thinking: Oh no! Vacation pictures! But I promise you, I am only going to share a few…well, maybe more than a few…eh-heh! This post shall begin the first of five ‘chapters’.  Ready? Let us begin.

Chapter 1

You don’t know me, without you have read a book by the name of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,”  but that ain’t no matter.

I should start off by mentioning where we went.  We went to Kansas for brother’s graduation! We left in the morning—’round six—and reached our destination around nine— Central time.

One of my favorite states we go through is Tennessee.  There is just something about that state that is really beautiful, especially early in the morning when the sun is coming up.

When we first started out, the sky was blue, but as the day went on—and it went on—it got dark and rainy.  It was pretty to see some of the places with all the rain, but I know dad would have preferred the drive without it.

The picture above sadly did not turn out as clear as I would have liked, but nevertheless, here it is! I took it for my waterbird-loving-friends.  See that little blob in the sky? That is the Heron.  I wish it could have come out a little better, but it’s hard to take a picture of something like that when you’re in the car.

‘And I’ve heard tell that Elves are moving west.  They do say they are going to the harbours, out away beyond the White Towers.’  Sam waved his arm vaguely: neither he nor any of them knew how far it was to the Sea, past the old towers beyond the western borders of the Shire.  But it was an old tradition that away over there stood the Grey Havens, from which at times elvenships set sail, never to return.

Well, close enough anyway.

Here is another bird at one of our stops.  A little Robin hopping around in the grass in search of food.

And speaking of food, here is our lunch-story:

We had packed a picnic lunch the night before we left and had planed on stopping at a rest area to eat, but of course, come lunch time the rain was really coming down.  Just the same, we found a nice little rest area and decided to go find a covered bench instead of just eating in the car.  When we pulled into the parking lot, we saw this little squirrel sitting on a garbage can—like seen above.  He was breaking our hearts because he was looking inside the garbage for something to eat—(or, maybe we wanted out of the rain.) Anyway, while we were walking to a table, some of the squirrels started looking at us and following us.  We walked into the building in the area to get out of the rain for a moment, then went out again on the other side to get to the tables.  There, sitting by the door leading out was this little squirrel.  We slowly opened the door, and he crept away. But as we started for the picnic table, well, as Frodo says in The Two Towers, “We’re not alone…”

They didn’t seem to be “underfed”.  They seemed, in fact, to be fat little buddies—nevertheless, it was hard to say ‘no’.  So, as we were leaving, we tossed a few little pieces to our furry friends.  Then, it was back on the road! … …

You know how it can get on a long car ride…

Ah! St. Louis! I don’t know what it is, but I really like the looks of St. Louis.

‘I was pretty tired, and first thing I knowed, I was asleep.  When I woke up I didn’t know where I was, for a minute.  I set up and looked around, a little scared.  Then I remembered.  The river looked miles and miles across.  The moon was so bright I could a counted the drift logs that went a slipping along, back and still, hundreds of yards out from shore.  Everything was dead quiet, and it looked late, and smelt late.  You know what I mean—I don’t know the words to put it in.’

A book I will always enjoy both reading and listening to. (If you are interested in an audio version of Huckleberry Finn and don’t know where to find one, I strongly suggest going to and searching this book.  This version should be on the top of the page.  If it’s not, you’ll know which is the right choice if you’re as big a Lord of the Rings fan as I am.)

All right, going off on a different story there…Back to the trip.

The beautiful Mississippi River.  This was the best picture I could get from the rain in the car.

One thing you can see while driving to Kansas.  Lots and lots of cows!

And pretty little houses with enormous yards! 😉

This was towards the end of the day.  I was kind of going for a Highway to Heaven look.  Did I succeed?

The final picture taken for the day.  A plane flying high in the evening sky.  If she comes with a warranty, I’ll take her!

(You should know, my sister and I can usually come up with a quote from anything for anything.)

So ends this chapter.  I hope I did it right, in other words, I hope you enjoyed it and will come back for Chapter Two!
