Captain Rogers

I am loving Crochet!

As you will notice, all two posts I’ve done this year have been about crocheting… I know I said I’d do one about my books—and I will—but until then, I want to share my latest project with you…

Can you guess what it is?…

I bought this kit at Costco about a months ago, which is why I really wanted to take up this terribly addictive hobby.  The kit came with the yarn to make two figures, and out of the two, Captain America was the one I liked, so, I started with him…

One thing I struggle with in crocheting is the concentration, which I think I mentioned in my last post.  When I was making his legs, I lost count on the SC a couple of times, which is why the one is a little bit fatter than the other.. though, I’m not sure if the one is small because I left something out, or if the other one is bigger because I added something…

Always helps to wear a smile.

The pattern in the book calls for his helmet instead of his hair, but I wanted him to have his hair.  I just used the pattern for Hawkeye’s hair and it worked just fine.  I think I’ll still make Cap’s helmet someday, but first things first I need to make his shield. . .

It’s the Crochet Pumpkin

Okay, last post I showed you what I had accomplished in crocheting thus far.

I’ve been practicing the basic crocheting technique: Single crochet.  I wanted to make sure I was really comfortable with this step before I tried anything else.

My first project was making a pair of bracers, because I’ve always wanted some.

I might try and put more of a design on them, but for now, this is what they look like.

And here’s something I made last night.  Just a little bracelet to show off my Irish colours.

On Monday, I looked up a video on Youtube for crocheting balls.  It was very helpful.

After the first three tries—id est, after failing three times because my concentration often wanders…what were we talking about?… —I finally managed to finish what I started.

But before I show you the finished ball, here is something I made to practice the first couple of steps.

It’s about the same size as the bell I made last time.

And finally, here is the ball! (now known as, the Pumpkin)

As you can see, the bottom of my pumpkin is a little loose, but regardless, I’m pleased with how it turned out.

The yarn is from Knit picks.  I bought it awhile ago because I thought it was pretty, and it was on sale.  The colour name is—what else—Pumpkin.

(Here’s a size comparison for you…

If you don’t know this little sneak, he’s 3 1/2″.)

The Making of a Cover

What else makes writing novels fun? … doing the artwork for said novel!

Here is the cover artwork I did for my latest book.  I drew it back before NANO started, just to give myself some inspiration on what I want my characters to look like.

This—as you can see—is the start.  Here we have the main character and his trusty horse.  (Well, their heads anyway…)

This fellow here, well, he’s a main c. too, but not the title character.

Screen Shot 2014-11-09 at 3.45.37 PM

He is the little brother—if you will.  Ready and waiting is he, with his bow (not seen) and quiver full of arrows.  Hopefully he’ll never run out…

And now, everyone is all drawn out.

Screen Shot 2014-11-09 at 3.45.54 PM

And almost all coloured…

And done!

From left to right: Bernard, Farerick, Parish, Broderick, Deyorn, and Eryn.

(As for where Bernard’s quiver is, I do not know…Mistakes will happen!)

So anyway, for this picture, I used mostly watercolours, with some pen—Pitt Pens, that is—and a little bit of coloured pencil.

25 Days and Counting!

HorsemanBroderick59.maggieroseblog

Is anyone out there as excited as I am for NANOWRIMO to start? Well, if you are writing up ideas, re-writing up better ones, playing out scenes in your head as you’re trying to sleep, spending all your spare time writing down more ideas—alright I almost have my whole book written down—HUH!—then yeah, you’re about as excited…

I cannot help it—it just excites me! The thought of all that writing, who knows how many people across the world spending November writing down their own personal stories.  But when I am through thinking of all that part, I think of my own story.

Last year was my first year participating.  I reached my word-count goal, which was about 40,000—(I even went over it a bit).  Anyway, just for fun, I tested out theWord-Count Goal Calculator to see what it said my word count could be…it said 171,360… Not really what I had in mind, but whatever.  (Not that I wouldn’t love to write a novel with 171,360 words, but I just don’t see it working out very well.)

So anyway, if you are a novel-writing lover like myself, feel free to leave comments on your experiences! Do any of you know yet what your novel shall be about, or do to just wing it when November 1st hits?

(drawing above is of the main character for my novel: artwork by me)
