The Kraken

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber’d and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

Captain Rogers

I am loving Crochet!

As you will notice, all two posts I’ve done this year have been about crocheting… I know I said I’d do one about my books—and I will—but until then, I want to share my latest project with you…

Can you guess what it is?…

I bought this kit at Costco about a months ago, which is why I really wanted to take up this terribly addictive hobby.  The kit came with the yarn to make two figures, and out of the two, Captain America was the one I liked, so, I started with him…

One thing I struggle with in crocheting is the concentration, which I think I mentioned in my last post.  When I was making his legs, I lost count on the SC a couple of times, which is why the one is a little bit fatter than the other.. though, I’m not sure if the one is small because I left something out, or if the other one is bigger because I added something…

Always helps to wear a smile.

The pattern in the book calls for his helmet instead of his hair, but I wanted him to have his hair.  I just used the pattern for Hawkeye’s hair and it worked just fine.  I think I’ll still make Cap’s helmet someday, but first things first I need to make his shield. . .

Cap: “I thought you were dead!”  ,   Bucky: “I thought you were smaller…”

It’s the Crochet Pumpkin

Okay, last post I showed you what I had accomplished in crocheting thus far.

I’ve been practicing the basic crocheting technique: Single crochet.  I wanted to make sure I was really comfortable with this step before I tried anything else.

My first project was making a pair of bracers, because I’ve always wanted some.

I might try and put more of a design on them, but for now, this is what they look like.

And here’s something I made last night.  Just a little bracelet to show off my Irish colours.

On Monday, I looked up a video on Youtube for crocheting balls.  It was very helpful.

After the first three tries—id est, after failing three times because my concentration often wanders…what were we talking about?… —I finally managed to finish what I started.

But before I show you the finished ball, here is something I made to practice the first couple of steps.

It’s about the same size as the bell I made last time.

And finally, here is the ball! (now known as, the Pumpkin)

As you can see, the bottom of my pumpkin is a little loose, but regardless, I’m pleased with how it turned out.

The yarn is from Knit picks.  I bought it awhile ago because I thought it was pretty, and it was on sale.  The colour name is—what else—Pumpkin.

(Here’s a size comparison for you…

If you don’t know this little sneak, he’s 3 1/2″.)

I’ve pretty much always wanted to learn how to Crochet, but never found the time to teach myself, or find someone to teach it to me.  Seems everyone I know who can crochet lives so far away…

A few years ago, I was given—for a birthday gift—a Winnie the Pooh Crochet kit.  Now, more recently, I bought myself another kit, and am finally teaching myself how to do it!

Before I try making any Hundred Acre Wood friends, or Superheroes, I’m just trying out the basic steps.

Here are my first attempts at it…

The first one was doing fine until I took a wrong turn, then the rest just kind of…

Well, after a few failed attempts to go on to a second row, (as you can see by number six, seven, and eight,) I finally got the hang of it—thanks to a Youtube video on crocheting.

And here it is! My first project—which was an accident.

I crocheted it, and it looked like a bell, so now we have yet another Christmas ornament  for the tree.

(And just to give you an idea of how big it is)

So, the reason I haven’t posted in such a long time is, I couldn’t get this site to work on the computer.  Then I couldn’t remember my password… but I got everything taken care of, and now I’ll try to post more in the future.

Oh, and I didn’t finish my NANO this passed November.  It was doomed from the beginning! I can’t write a love story when the love story is the only focus.  Not only that, the characters were boring and I just couldn’t find it in my heart to like any of them. Seriously, who wants to read a book where even the writer doesn’t like any of the characters?

I did finally get my 2014 NANO book through to Create Space and I now have my very own copy! I’ll do a post on that some other time.

Tick-tock…tick tock…

Tis the eve of NANOWRIMO…are you ready?

Tonight I will be going over the final details on my book idea, making sure each characters character is fitting, and hoping that New York will get another W…sorry, got distracted there.

Now, moving on, here is an idea of what the plot of my book is:

Nathan and Dorothy Warner own a farm, which provides food and money for themselves and their two daughters, Cate and Robin—who is actually adopted.  The Warner farm is in bad shape.  The barns are falling apart, the fences need mending, and the chicken coops are leaking.  Due to bad crops and a back injury, Nate Warner is unable to fix his place up himself or hire help.  One day, a young man named Joseph Collins, shows up who is willing to help the Warners get back on their feet.  Cate is quite taken by him, but is shattered when she learns that his father owns a business which has been making offers to buy the Warner place.  Has Joe been lying to the family about his intentions, or is he sincerely trying to help a family in need?

Are you paying attention?…

Okay people, after careful consideration—and finally figuring out my password—I have decided to participate in NANOWRIMO this year!!

My only fear?

It starts in just three days…pressure.

It’s not that I am totally unprepared; I have my characters set, the plot summary, and even the book title.  Still, something just feels different about this years preparation compared to last years.

Last year was the best time I’ve had doing NANOWRIMO so far.  Okay, so it was only my second year… But I knew the characters like the backs of my hands, and I knew exactly how the story would end, and where it would leave my beloved characters.  I am even planning a sequel for that book, but it may be in my best interest to give myself more than a month to write it.  If I had not prepared myself well last year, I never would have made it.  The book was long, and the most detailed thing I’ve ever tried writing.  It came out well, but I know I could have done better had I had more time.  I am hoping that the sequel will maybe be even longer, and there will certainly be lots more going on, with even more characters.

But anyway, I’m getting away from the point of this post: THIS years novel.

It was hard coming up with a simpler idea this year.  I would—for the first time in my life—like to write a shorter book.  My goal is 120 pages.  I thought of several ideas for this years challenge.  One was a mystery, since those are my most favorite types of books.  (SHERLOCK HOLMES) eh-hem… It is still my goal to write a mystery book someday, and I am quite interested in attempting to write this somewhat haunting tale.  The unexpected turns are always pleasing in books, which is why I love mysteries.…like Hound…creepy.

Then, I thought of how it would be interesting to write a love story.  I thought of one, and even thought up all of the characters; however, it was lacking something…a full idea of what could happen.  Again, I still would like to write it someday, but it needs more details.

There was one more book idea I had, which I had already started writing sometime ago.  It was a book dating back to the times before my latest novel.  It’s title is, The Witch of Brookshire.  But still, the idea of a love story was very appealing to me, and since last years novel was a war story (and TWoB would be one as well), I’ve decided to go with a love story.

Finally, I decided on a story about a family who lives on a farm, which is beginning to fall apart.  Love stories seem like they are hard.  So many have been done, and all the good ones seem to be the same plots.  They hate each other because they love each other, there’s a triangle involved, etc.  My idea, I’m sure, has been done before, but as people say, “not with your characters!”

Keep writing!

UPDATE: My book had been delayed.  Every time I tried sending it in to Create Space, an email came back telling me the cover photo was going to be blurry.  Then I found out it was because I was using the wrong application to make the cover. (Turns out it wasn’t the scanners fault after all…) Anyway, after fourteen tries, it’s finally done!!!!!!!

Hullo again.

Mother and I have finished proofreading! In fact, we finished awhile ago, however, due to complications involving a certain book cover, my novel is taking longer to publish than I had anticipated.

I, honestly, don’t know when I am going to learn my lesson.  But it will be fine.  As long as it comes out right in the end, I’ll accept the amount of time it’s taken.  The last novel I published, I got it published right away and it didn’t turn out well, so I will try and deal with the delay.

(Still, me being me, I am frustrated with the whole thing…)

Coming Soon…

Hullo! Goodness, it’s been a long time since I last posted…

“Did you miss me?…”

Anyway, back to the original idea of this post.

After completing the NANOWRIMO challenge, I enlisted my mother to help me proofread my novel.  It is a long process, but we are closing in and only have two more chapters to check! So, I didn’t finishes in time to get the free copies,😦 but I still intend to send it to Createspace.

Once the novel is finally complete, I will have a post about it.

P.S. This was my 40th post!!

Swallows in Missouri

I told a friend I would share some pictures of swallows dipping over the river.  Here they are!

This first picture is a nest that we found at college.  Ain’t it purtty?

It’s kind of hard to see the swallows, so I put some circles around them so you could find them better.
